It's easier to lash out at people than to try to understand them. If you are different than me it takes work to bridge the gap.
Also, I think some people think if they can cause trouble it gives them control over others. Usually people who do this feel inadequate or like they aren't good enough in other people's eyes (like low self-esteem). So, they try to make other people look worse than they feel about themselves.
The best thing to do in these situations is to not allow people to have control over you by not giving in to their negative attitude or comments. And, if someone comes to you talking about someone else behind their back just let them know you're not interested. If they have something to say they should say it to the person they're talking about.
The best way to stop a back biter is to not let them open their mouth. :)
